42nd Foundation Day of ICAR RC for NEH Region celebrated at Umiam.
The 42nd Foundation Day of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region was celebrated on 9th January, 2017, in the M.S. Swaminathan Hall of the institute headquarters at Umiam. Dr. Mangala Rai, Former DG, ICAR & Secy., DARE, Govt. of India, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his address, Dr. Mangala Rai opined that multidisciplinary approach is the best strategy for an inclusive agricultural research for which a programmatic alignment of different divisions and agencies is a prerequisite to tackle a task at hand. He highlighted 13 points to consider which will guide in the institute’s future research orientation, foremost being an aided investment in adaptation research. He also emphasized that to double the farmers’ income, technologies, encompassing high value crops, enhanced water use efficiency, water harvesting, etc, should be calibrated according to the farmers’ socio-economic and cultural conditions. The welcoming address was presented by Dr. Satish Chandra, HoD Crop Protection, following which the Director, ICAR RC for NEH Region, gave an overview of the past 42 years of the institute, from developing hill farming system models to conserving more than 7000 rice germplasm in NBPGR, Umiam. In his narration of the institute’s evolution over the years, the Director expressed that the way forward would be attaining self-sufficiency and aim for the international market, considering the region being strategically located near five other countries viz., Bangladesh, Bhuta, Nepal, Myanmar and China. Dr. N. B. Singh, Dean, CPGS, Umiam, who was the Guest of Honour, heralded the achievements ICAR RC for NEH Region has made so far and asserted the advantages of working in the north east hill region.
On the occasion, a compendium documenting the 42 years of research, activities and technologies developed by different divisions, centres and KVKs of the institute was released.
